- Controlled Drugs legislation requires that Schedule 2 and 3 CD entries are accurate, time-stamped, and available for inspection at any point without notice.

The New Medicine Service is one of the most valuable NHS Advanced Services available to community pharmacies. According to Community Pharmacy England, in October 2025, the service expanded to include depression as an eligible therapeutic area, building on existing conditions like asthma, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.
The payment structure is straightforward: £14 for the initial intervention consultation, and a further £14 for the completed follow-up. That is £28 per patient when both touchpoints are captured and claimed correctly. Without a tracking system, follow-ups slip, claims go unsubmitted, and that income disappears.
An NMS manager keeps every patient journey visible, prompts staff when follow-ups are due, and makes sure no completed consultation goes unclaimed. For pharmacies running solid NMS volumes, the financial difference between a managed and unmanaged process is significant.
CD Register
The Controlled Drugs register is one of the most legally sensitive documents in your pharmacy. Every receipt and supply of a Schedule 2 controlled drug must be recorded with the correct details: date, patient name, address, quantity, form, and running balance. Inspectors take errors seriously.
An electronic CD register replaces paper entries with a digital system that calculates running balances automatically, flags discrepancies before they become problems, and maintains a searchable log of every entry. Is it built specifically for the UK?
The system needs to understand EPS, NHS Advanced Services, and GPhC compliance requirements. US-built platforms do not translate.
Does it connect with your PMR?
Your Patient Medication Record system is the core of your dispensing operation. Any management software you layer on top should integrate with it cleanly rather than creating a separate data silo.
Is it cloud-based?
On-premise systems are increasingly difficult to maintain, update, and access across devices or locations. Cloud-based software gives you more flexibility and does not require local IT infrastructure to function.
Does it cover compliance as well as operations?
Some platforms handle delivery well but have nothing useful for CD registers or compliance logs. A platform that covers the full operational picture will always serve you better than several disconnected tools.
What does the support model look like?

The Broader Context
NHS England's long-term plan continues to push community pharmacy toward more clinical services, greater digital integration, and tighter accountability. Pharmacy First expanded the range of conditions pharmacists can treat directly. The government committed up to £8 million specifically for digital developments in community pharmacy during 2025 to 2026. NMS keeps growing in scope. Prescription tracking via the NHS App is now rolling out nationally across England, with pharmacy IT suppliers activating it in stages.
Pharmacies still managing their operations on paper or across several disconnected systems are going to find it progressively harder to keep pace. The compliance requirements are not easing, and the clinical opportunities are real, but capturing them needs solid, organised systems running behind the scenes.
